Inonotus obliquus, commonly known as chaga, is a fungus in the Hymenochaetaceae family, appearing as a mass of mycelium or sclerotium resembling burnt charcoal. It grows primarily on birch trees, and occasionally on other hardwoods like elm and alder, in forests across the northern hemisphere. Chaga forms under the bark of mature trees through wounds, developing into a cracked, black extension over 5-7 years. The polysaccharides (beta-glucans) in chaga are known for their antioxidant properties, supporting cell integrity and immune health.

Chaga is traditionally used to promote gastrointestinal health and overall wellness, often prepared as a decoction for tea or incorporated into broths and soups. Available as organic cut, powder or powder extract chaga.  The cut chaga can be re-brewed for tea without loss of flavor or potency, retaining its quality when stored properly.  The chaga powder is milled from the entire sclerotia.

Extract powders offer a more bio-available form of mushroom products than the simple powdered mushrooms, which need to be cooked or processed more in order to release the beneficial properties. This chaga extract powder can be added to teas, smoothies, or encapsulated. Our one-to-one extract powder starts with wild collected chaga mushrooms that are made into a fine powder. From there, they are extracted in water at 90°-100° C for three hours. When this decoction is complete, the water is evaporated producing a concentrated fluid. With the mushroom powder still in the fluid state it is sent to a spray drier which produces a fine powder. In this process the raw material is never removed from the extraction, meaning that everything from the original mushroom is retained in the final product.
